WHAT TO EXPECT
Clinical approach
Each consultation is conducted with care and attention, with a focus on thoroughly understanding your concerns, goals, and individual circumstances. We believe in providing clear education and thoughtful recommendations, ensuring you feel informed, supported, and confident in your treatment decisions.
1. UNDERSTAND
Clinical assessment
A comprehensive history, examination and review of imaging will be performed, and further investigations may be required.
2. EXPLAIN
Explanation of diagnosis
Time will be taken to clearly explain your diagnosis and discuss your condition. Sometimes the diagnosis may not be immediately certain, but we will work together to identify the cause of your symptoms and the best way forward.
3. EXPLORE OPTIONS
Discussion of management
All appropriate management options will be discussed, including surgery if indicated. Risks and benefits of each option will be explored.
4. GUIDE
Recommend treatment
A recommendation will be provided by Dr Jon Liew based on both current evidence and his clinical experience. Together we will agree on a management plan that best suits your needs and goals.
5. COMMUNICATE
Ongoing communication
Regular and easily accessible communication with yourself and your other health providers is important to ensure that the management plan is followed and any issues that arise can be solved quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
Technically no, but a GP (or specialist) referral letter is required to claim the Medicare rebate for the consultation fee.
A GP referral letter lasts 12 months.
-
Please arrive 10 minutes early to the appointment, as you may be required to complete some forms as a new patient. It’s normal (and okay) to be running late, please call if this is the case.
-
Please plan to be in the rooms for an hour from the start time of your consultation. Let the reception or myself know if you have other commitments after your appointment and we will do our best to accommodate.
-
Of course! Bringing someone with you is a great idea - they can help you remember information, ask questions and discuss your options afterwards.
-
No. The consultation is about understanding your knee and exploring appropriate treatment options. Many knee conditions can be managed without surgery. I will recommend surgery only when I believe it is appropriate for your circumstances.
-
Yes. A second opinion can help you better understand your diagnosis and treatment options. Please bring your previous scans, relevant letters and any operation reports, along with a valid referral.
-
Many imaging providers allow electronic access, but this is not always available. When you make an appointment please tell my rooms where and when your scans were performed, and bring any images, reports or access details you have been given.
-
I will write to your referring doctor outlining the assessment and treatment plan. With your permission, relevant information can also be shared with your physiotherapist or other treating health professionals. Please provide their details at your appointment.
-
Absolutely. It’s normal to have additional questions after the consultation. There can be a lot of information discussed during the appointment.
Please contact my rooms on (02) 7261 0168 or email team@drjonliew.com.au. My team can help with some practical questions and pass clinical queries on to me. Some questions may require a follow-up consultation but I’ll try to save you from having to come back in person.
-
That’s a great question. Surgeons each have different qualities, experience and approaches. The best treatment pathway for each patient can be subjective. You should decide which surgeon makes you comfortable and confident about your treatment decisions. If you are unsure about a surgeon (whether it’s me or another surgeon), I would encourage you to seek a second opinion.
